Why it’s worth visiting the fortified church in Biertan:
From the entrance you will find something like this: The door of sacrilege, which was worked in 1515 in Sighisoara by Johannes Reichmuth. With a stunning system of locks that still works, the door was awarded at the Universal Exhibition in 1990.
In the church you will also find the largest polyptic altar in Transylvania, which has more than 20 paintings made by Australian and German artists. The amazing organ is also about 140 years old, which is still played today at the meetings of the Saxons, but also the amvon, which dates back to 1500 and was made from a single piece of sandstone.
Don’t miss the divorce room! It is said that in this church room, the local broken up couples were closed down until they reached a consensus: Either they were at peace forever or they separated and each person took their own way in life. Amazing or not, this room has been extremely beneficial for the pairs in Biertan. In about 400 years, only a couple who was imprisoned in the divorce room got separated! The room now contains a bed, a chair, a glass, a plate and a piece of cutlery. This was probably one of the major reasons why the quarrels came to reconcile: The fact that they had to share the same thing.
